Watch This Space: 9 Shows I've Devoured That You Should Binge This Weekend
From crime to cushion fluffing, I've covered everything.
1. Dept Q on Netflix
If you’re craving a moody binge look no further than Dept Q. With a cast stacked with familar fan-faves including Kelly Macdonald (Line of Duty), Kate Dickie (The Day of The Jackal, Annika) and Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter, Bridget Jones), it’s already worth watching for them alone. Prepare to be hooked after a couple of eps, and also prepare for your prime suspect theory to flip at least three times. And quietly, Akram will steal your heart.
But enough of me banging on about it, here’s the lowdown from Netflix: “A brash but brilliant cop becomes head of a new police department, where he leads an unlikely team of misfits in solving Edinburgh's cold cases.”
It’s brooding vibes, a brilliant cast, and the kind of crime you can lose a Sunday to.
2. Shetland S9 on Britbox
I’ve been not-so-patiently waiting for the new season of Shetland, and it’s finally dropped on BritBox. While the opening crime is a tiny bit predictable (I’m blaming my husband and his oddly specific knowledge of Oxford-educated accountants), it’s still 100% worth the watch. Expect sweeping green hills, suspiciously handsome strangers, and enough Scottish accents to make your phone start autocorrecting in Gaelic. Plus, there are nine seasons to get around!
3. The Serial Killer’s Wife on Paramount+
Can a crime show ever really be called “an easy watch”? Technically no I’d say, but this one comes close. Think Harlan Coben-lite with fewer twists and less whiplash, but still totally bingeable. It follows a woman (the amazing Annabel Scholey) who suddenly finds herself playing detective when her husband’s arrested on suspicion for being a serial killer. Put it this way, you might find yourself side-eyeing your partner by ep two.
4. For Her Sins on Britbox
Another easy-on-the-brain thriller to add to your BritBox back pocket is For Her Sins. It’s not exactly groundbreaking, but it scratches the itch, so I’d say it’s the kind of show you keep in your streaming reserves for when you’ve run out of the heavy hitters.
Per IMDb: “Follows a perfect woman whose mask begins to crack when a charismatic stranger arrives on the scene.”
So yes, secrets, lies, and just enough unravelling to keep you hitting ‘next episode’.
5. Secrets We Keep on Netflix
It’s been a minute since I dipped into a Danish drama, so I pressed play on Secrets We Keep and have zero regrets. The setup is simple - an au pair vanishes and the neighbour goes sleuthing to get to the bottom of it. Tense, twisty, and Scandi in all the right ways.
6. Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes on Disney+
Based on a true story, this one dives into the police pursuit of suspects in a series of failed bombing attempts and fair warning, it’s not light viewing. It’s intense, gut-wrenching, and will have you oscillating between tears and full-body rage at the sheer level of incompetence on display. Watch it yesterday.
7. Brassic on Netflix
OK, so it’s not all doom, gloom, and serial killers over here, sometimes I dabble in petty crime too, courtesy of Brassic. Set in a scrappy corner of Northern England, it gives Shameless meets The Inbetweeners, with more laughs, more chaos, and a whole lot of heart. Think bad decisions, dodgy schemes, and brilliant one-liners.
8. The One That Got Away on ABC iview
I loved Richard Harrington in Hinterland, so I gave The One That Got Away a spin and it’s totally watchable. Also set in Wales (moody scenery incoming), it follows two detectives with a complicated history as they dig into a new murder that’s suspiciously linked to an old case. The reviews are mixed with The Guardian saying it’s cracking, while others say skip it, but I’d call it a solid slow-burner to have up your sleeve for those “I feel like solving a case but not losing sleep over it” nights.
9. Interior Design Masters
I’ve only watched one season of this so far (featuring my fave Alan Carr), and by golly I love a lifestyle reality TV comp. Give me mood boards, meltdowns, and a dramatic room reveal any day. While some of the decor decisions are questionable, I still loved every minute and recommend as the ultimate background show for when you want to scroll through your saved items.
I’ve got a hefty watchlist building, so keep your eyes peeled for another TV show drop coming your way soon.
